Since the pandemic, Looking for Lilith Theatre Company has mounted fewer full-stage productions, but they have remained busy with the education-based mission that has defined their company since the beginning. This collaboration with the Adelante Girlspeak program is a good example.

Less a fully developed play and more an expressive document of the concerns of young Latinx women. The script’s development takes precedence over performance, an observation made clear in the discussion afterward. Talking about their work, the five Adelante members present (one was out of town but participated in some video segments) showed a good deal of confidence and an emotional expression of meaningful camaraderie.  Shannon Woolley Allison stepped in for the missing member, emphasizing the mentorship of Lilith company members.

What is on their minds are family and friends but, more importantly, how they are perceived as Latinx teenagers, marginalized, misunderstood, and targeted for discrimination. The production is a series of vignettes structured around a series of scenes in which the girls are servers at a restaurant. Encounters with particular customers and the vulnerability of working an outdoor patio are a part of each scene, and one of the most intriguing interactions prompts one server to relive it over and over again until she can no longer be certain that the sexist comment from a male customer was real or not.

That sort of play on memory and perception is pretty sophisticated and elevates this production above the stereotypical “teenage” identity melodrama. The young women are kids of a certain age in the United States that carry that additional burden of having their cultural identity called out in sometimes passive aggressive and sometimes aggressively racist fashion.

And when the character who persistently complains about the danger of working the patio has disappeared in the last restaurant scene following the introduction of an active shooter outside of the restaurant, these young women show they are up for tougher stuff and know how to bring the audience into the process in meaningful ways. In such a moment the specifics of Latinx identity are connected to a more universal experience that all of us can relate to.
